Workshop Overview
The purpose of this technology transfer workshop is to provide the student with an introduction to capillary electrophoresis, the chemistry of popular methamphetamine manufacturing methods, and the application of capillary electrophoresis (CE) analysis to clandestine laboratory samples. This class will include both lecture and demonstration activities to illustrate the concepts presented. Analysis will be demonstrated on standard reference samples and methamphetamine manufacture via currently popular manufacturing methods. Samples generated from those experiments will be collected and analyzed using CE and gas chromotography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) analyses. The student will be introduced to phosphorus chemistry and stoichiometric reaction equations as they apply to the clandestine manufacture of methamphetamine. Using CE and GC/MS analyses in conjunction with the phosphorus chemistry, students will learn how to evaluate analytical data to determine reaction materials and conditions.
Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the Capillary Electrophoresis Technology Transfer Workshop, the participant will acquire the knowledge to:

  • Explain the capillary electrophoresis analysis process
  • Describe methods used in the manufacture of methamphetamine using ammonia
  • Summarize the CE and GC/MS analysis of methamphetamine produced by ammonia methods
  • Explain the reaction mechanisms and stoichiometry associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine using hydriodic acid (HI) methods
  • Describe the HI methods used to manufacture methamphetamine
  • Summarize the CE and GC/MS analysis of methamphetamine produced by HI methods
  • Evaluate analytical data to determine manufacturing method
  • Determine the significance of analytical findings
