Communication Is Key

Regular communication between law enforcement, laboratory and prosecution has multiple advantages:

• Limits additional or redundant testing
• Identifies evidence needed for proof/conviction
• Facilitates an assessment of required resources and associated costs
• Assists in the evaluation of information: Is there enough to continue and adjudicate the hit?

For un-adjudicated hits, this information could provide leverage for plea agreements, evidence of other crimes, enhancement of punishment at sentencing and information to withhold parole, all of which can help ensure public safety.¹⁷
