Population Genetics and Statistics Training

Overview

Welcome to the President's DNA Initiative – Population Genetics and Statistics Training. This e-learning program is a distance delivery version of one component from the Forensic DNA Academy, which was previously developed by the National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).

Course Content and Objectives

The training is presented in modular fashion, with a self-contained Podcast covering each objective. There is also related web-based content that includes in-depth course content and a final assessment that can be used to demonstrate competency in the subject.

Upon successful completion of the course new DNA analysts will be able to:

  1. Describe the basic population genetic principles that influence allele frequencies
  2. Describe the statistical principles that govern interpretation of genetic population data
  3. Apply these genetic and statistical principles to interpretation of DNA test results

The material is also available in a different form in the DNA Analyst Training class on http://www.DNA.gov.

Finally, you should have access to a copy of the National Research Council Report "The Evaluation of Forensic DNA Evidence," commonly referred to as "NRC II" and available through http://books.nap.edu.

Opinions or points of view expressed in this report represent a consensus of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official position or policies of the U.S. Department of Justice.
